New Releases - December 29, 2009

9 [animated 2009] - Visually dazzling animated fantasy produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambatov about 9 small rag dolls who are the only ones left to stop machines from overtaking the world. Voice actors include Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly and John C. Reilly. With commentary and featurettes. PG-13.

Blind Date [2008] - Versatile actor Stanley Tucci returns to directing [he did the terrific Big Night] with this remake of Theo Van Gogh's moving dramedy of a separated married couple who go on a series of blind dates to reinvigorate their marriage. Tucci and Patricia Clarkson play the couple. With commentary. Unrated.

Deadline [2009] - Ironically one of Brittany Murphy's last films, this horror thriller stars Murphy as a writer who tries to recover from a nervous breakdown by staying in a house that may be haunted by a dead couple. Thora Birch and Marc Blucas co-star. R

Extreme Ice - Photojournalist James Balog makes a convincing visual argument that glaciers in both the North and South Poles are melting and posing a possible catastrophe in the future. 2009. Unrated.

Facing Ali - While we have seen many documentaries about boxing great Muhammad Ali, this is the first one that focuses on what his opponents think about him. Boxers interviewed include George Foreman, Joe Frazier, and George Chuvalo. 2009. R.

Glee: Season 1 Volume 1 - One of the hottest cult TV shows of the 2009 season arrives on DVD with its first 13 episodes. The hilarious musical comedy follows the exploits of a downtrodden high school glee club that gets a needed boost from an idealistic Spanish teacher, charmingly played by Matthew Morrison. His nemesis, an extremely conservative and competitive gym teacher, is played by brilliant Jane Lynch. With several featurettes and unseen footage. 4 discs.

The Goods: Live Hard Sell Hard - Jeremy Piven [Entourage] gives an over-the-top performance as a hot shot used car salesman who is hired to save a dying car lot no matter what it takes. Ving Rhames, James Brolin, Charles Napier and Kathryn Hahn co-star. 2009. R.

Jennifer's Body: Unrated Version - Sexy Megan Fox [Transformers] plays the hottest girl in high school. The only trouble is she's possessed by a flesh-eating demon, and it's up to her best friend [Big Love's Amanda Seyfried] to stop her before she kills more student bodies. Another wild satire, this time poking fun at sexy teen horror flicks, from Juno writer Diablo Cody. With commentary and Theatrical R version. 2009.

Live! - Eva Mendes plays an ambitious TV network exec who comes up with an outrageous game show/reality concept where people play Russian Roulette on live TV. Andre Braugher, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, David Krumholtz, and Charlotte Ross co-star in this dark comedy. 2009. R

Paranormal Activity - Made for an amazing $15,000, this shaky cam cult horror classic has already grossed $107,000,000+!!! Taking a page from The Blair Witch Project, director Oren Peli used an unknown cast and employed a lot of chillingly effective camera effects to create shocks for a film about a young guy who sets up a camera in his house to see if something or someone is trying to possess his live-in girlfriend. With alternate ending. 2009. R.

A Perfect Getaway: Unrated Director's Cut - Newlyweds Milla Jovovich and Steve Zahn go on a hiking trip in Hawaii that is paradise until they run into another couple who may be psychotic killers. Timothy Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez play the rival couple in this effective thriller. Also with Theatrical R rated version. 2009.

Silent Light - Indie drama about a Mennonite family man in Mexico who has an affair with another woman, causing much conflict. With featurettes and deleted scenes. 2007. Unrated.

Take Out - Acclaimed indie drama about an illegal Chinese immigrant who delivers Chinese food for a living (played by Charles Jang). When his debtors suddenly visit and demand payment, he has only one day to get the money together or face several dire consequences. With commentary, deleted scenes and featurettes. 2004. Unrated.

The United States of Tara: 1st Season - Toni Collette won an Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy for her performance as a woman with multiple personalities and issues...lots of issues. This Showtime dramedy is produced by Steven Spielberg and co-stars John Corbett [Northern Exposure]. 2009.

Weather Girl - Tricia O'Kelley is delightful as a TV weather girl who is fired when she has a breakdown on-air after finding out her TV anchor boyfriend is having an affair with his co-anchor. Can she weather the storm? Mark Harmon, Jon Cryer, and Jane Lynch co-star in this romantic comedy. With outtakes and featurette. 2008. R.
