New Releases - January 5, 2010

Big Love: 3rd Season - This controversial HBO series has grown even more complex and compelling with each season as the story deals with conflicted Mormon Bill Henrickson, a respected Salt Lake City retail king who happens to have 3 secret wives and is grooming a possible fourth. The cast is terrific, with Bill Paxton at his best as the angst-ridden anti-hero and his 3 demanding but beautiful wives brilliantly played by Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny and Ginnifer Goodwin. Harry Dean Stanton is devilishly good as Paxton's powerful rival, the messiah of a Mormon cult Paxton disdains and who happens to be Sevigny's dad. The show is one of the best currently on TV, deftly mixing moving and disturbing drama with biting humor. 10 episodes spread across 4 separate disc rentals with featurettes. 2009. Unrated.

Carriers - Four young friends fleeing a viral epidemic discover that they are more dangerous than the plague they are trying to elude. Chris Pine [Star Trek], Lou Taylor Pucci, Piper Perabo, Emily VanCamp, and Christopher Meloni star in this dramatic thriller. 2009. PG-13.

Chuck: 2nd Season - To promote the premiere of the 3rd Season, Warner Home Video is finally releasing the terrific and pivotal 2nd Season of one of the most fun shows on the air. Zachary Levi is perfect as the titular anti-hero, a nervous computer nerd who sells electronics at the Buy More [a veiled Best Buy chain], but when a computer chip containing volumes of covert info is activated in his brain, the U.S. government has to try to protect him...or kill him before their enemies get him. Adam Baldwin and Yvonne Strahovski are great as the agents assigned to help the neophyte. Baldwin has a lot of fun as the steely and short-fused Casey while Strahovski is just plain stunning as the butt-kicking blonde beauty Sarah, who falls for Chuck. This season, aside from getting your usual doses of satiric 007 jabs, you get to find out a lot more about Sarah's surprising past, Chuck's family, and why Chuck was chosen as "The Intersect." Lots of great guest stars too: Chevy Chase, Jordana Brewster [very hot as Chuck's ex], Gary Cole, Scott Bakula, and Nicole Richie [surprisingly fun as Sarah's nasty high school nemesis]. 22 epis on 6 separate discs. Many deleted scenes and featurettes. 2008-2009. Unrated.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs - Based on a popular children's book, this better than average animated feature should be delightful to both children and adults, but be prepared to feel some hunger pangs while watching. The clever plot has a bumbling young inventor creating a machine that makes food, which is great at first but soon turns into a gastronomic nightmare when it will not stop. Voices include Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Bruce Campbell, Andy Samberg, Mr. T., Benjamin Bratt and Neil Patrick Harris. With commentary and featurettes. 2009. PG.

Final Destination [#4] in 3-D - This tongue-in-cheek fourth installment of the ghoulishly popular horror series has teens averting death in a deadly race car crash. However, Death won't take No for an answer and he hunts each of the survivors down, bestowing them with ingenious, over-the-top deaths. This DVD release includes the 3-D version that had audiences jumping out of their seats. Bobby Campo, Shantel VanSanten, Nick Zano, Haley Webb, Mykelti Williamson, Krista Allen, and Stephanie Honore star. 2009. R.

Speed Racer: The Next Generation: The Beginning and The Fast Trade: The Movie - These two animated films introduced the most recent TV version revival of the popular Japanese Animation classic that coincided with the release of the live action feature. 2008.

Trucker - Michelle Monaghan gives a wonderful performance in this acclaimed indie dramedy about an independent young woman truck driver, whose life has to shift gears when her estranged 11 year old son shows up on her doorstep because his father is ill. Nathan Fillion [Castle, Serenity] plays her drinking partner, and Benjamin Bratt plays her hospitalized ex. Also starring Jimmy Bennett and Joey Lauren Adams. 2008. R.
