Before the Rain - Milcho Manchevski directs this acclaimed drama that interweaves stories involving a Christian Orthodox Monk [Gregoire Colin], a British photo agent [Katrin Cartlidge], and a Macedonia war photographer [Rade Serbedzija] as the Balkan War swirls around them. With commentary, interviews and music video. In Macedonian with English subtitles. 1994. Unrated

Burning Plain, The - Guillermo Arriaga, the screenwriter of Babel and 21 Grams, makes his directorial debut with this moving drama about two young girls who have troubled mothers that share a common bond though they are strangers. Academy Award winners Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger play the two female leads. John Corbett and Danny Pino co-star. Includes featurettes. 2009. R.

Deadgirl: Unrated Director's Cut - This better than average and ultra-gory teen horror flick tells the tale of two teen boys who cut school and decide to go to a deserted hospital. While exploring, they find what they think is a dead girl but she unfortunately isn't. Michael Bowen, Candice Accola, Noah Segan, and Shiloh Fernandez star. With commentary, deleted scenes, and featurette. 2008. Unrated.

Departures - Last year's Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film finally makes it to DVD. This moving Japanese drama stars Masahiro Motoki as a failed cellist who returns to his home town and secretly takes a job as a person who prepares bodies to be placed in coffins. At first, he finds the job morbid but evetually discovers that he may have found his true calling in this unusual but very tranquil profession. Also stars Tsutomu Yamazaki [Tampopo] and Ryoko Hirose. Directed by Yojiro Takita. In Japanese with English subtitles. 2008. PG-13.

Downloading Nancy - Indie favorite Maria Bello [The Cooler] stars as a woman trapped in a desperately unhappy marriage. She meets a mysterious man on the internet and forms a bond with him, hoping he will help put her out of her misery, but she starts to fall in love with him, causing chaos in all of their lives. This disturbing and controversial drama features intense and hyper-realistic performances by Bello and her two romantic interests [Rufus Sewell as her boorish husband and Jason Patric as her enigmatic internet lover]. 2008. Unrated.

Fame [2009] - This sanitized and more family-friendly remake of the R-rated Fame from 1980 [think High School Musical in NYC] puts the emphasis on dancing and music over character development even more than the original did. It follows the ups and downs of a group of talented young students at New York City High School for the Performing Arts. This extended version even includes 15 minutes more of dancing and music. Debbie Allen, who was a teacher in the original, reprises her role along with Charles S. Dutton, Kelsey Grammer, Megan Mullally and Bebe Neuwirth as new teachers. Thomas Dekker [Terminator-Sarah Connor Chronicles], Kristy Flores, Paul Iacono, Naturi Naughton, and Kay Panabaker play the main students. 2009. Theatrical version = PG. Extended version = Unrated.

Goliath [2008] - Comedy short filmmakers the Zellner Brothers directed this first feature about a loser who loses his wife and his job, but worst of all loses his cat Goliath. He then goes on an obsessive search to find the cat in this absurdist farce. David Zellner plays the lead. 2008. Unrated.

Grin without a Cat - Chris Marker, director of the much beloved La Jetee and Sans Soleil, helmed this confounding and overlong epic documentary about protest and revolt during the 1960's and 1970's. Intercutting footage of anti-Vietnam War protests, Salvador Allende and the coup in Chile, revolutionary Che Guevara, the Shah of Iran, Fidel Castro and many others, the film is alternately irritating and effective. You be the judge but get ready for a long 3 hours. 1977. Unrated.

Halloween II [2009]: Unrated Director's Cut - Director of the hit remake of Halloween, Rob Zombie, returns to direct this equally effective horror that picks up right where the other one left off. Horrific killer Michael Myers continues to stalk his sister Laurie Strode while killing a number of other victims. Scout Taylor Compton plays the heroine, and the interesting supporting cast includes Malcolm McDowell, Brad Dourif, Sheri Moon Zombie, Caroline Williams and Margot Kidder. With commentary. deleted scenes, and featurettes. 2009. Unrated.

Hurt Locker, The - One of the front runners for Oscar glory this year, this highly acclaimed war actioner follows a bomb disposal unit in Iran, showing both the glory and the tragedy of war. The great cast includes Jeremy Renner, Ralph Fiennes, Guy Pearce and Evangeline Lilly. Underrated director Kathryn Bigelow, who made cult hits like Near Dark, Strange Days, and Point Break, has finally made her masterpiece, emphasizing the reality of war and what it does to those who engage in it. 2009. R.

I Can Do Bad All by Myself - Tyler Perry's Madea returns in this feature film adapation of Perry's play about a sexy nightclub singer who suddenly finds herself taking care of her late sister's kids and on the verge of romance when a handyman rents a room in her basement. Taraji P. Henson, Adam Rodriguez, Mary J. Blige, and Gladys Knight star. 2009. PG13.

In the Loop - Acclaimed but little seen, this witty political satire is based on the BBC comedy The Thick of It and shows how several minor mistakes and miscommunications can become an international crisis in the hands of power spin doctors in the U.S. and Britain. Peter Capaldi, Tom Hollander, Gina McKee, James Gandolfini, Mimi Kennedy, Steve Coogan and Anna Chlumsky star. 2009. Unrated.

Kiss of the Spider Woman - Surprisingly unavailable on DVD until recently, this classic political drama is mostly set in a Latin American prison, where a fiery and tough revolutionary named Valentin is forced to room with Molina, a sensitive gay man accused of seducing a minor. To make the time pass, Molina tells Valentin a fantastic and erotic tale about a seductive Spider Woman in this moving political allegory. Both Raul Julia and William Hurt are excellent as the two leads, and Hurt earned a well-deserved Best Actor Academy Award. Includes many extras, including a full-length documentary. 1985. R.

Ministers, The - A New York homicide detective decides to pursue her father's killers and her only clue is a pamphlet for a covert religious order. As she gets closer, she discovers she might be involved with one of the killers in this crime thriller. John Leguizamo, Harvey Keitel, Florencia Lozano, Wande De Jesus, and Diana Venora star. 2009. R.

Moon - Sam Rockwell gives one of his best performances as a solitary moon worker who may be hallucinating or going crazy due to his work. Kevin Spacey co-stars in this fascinating cult sci-fi hit. With commentary, featurettes, and shorts. 2009. R.

Simpsons, The: The Complete 20th Season - To celebrate The Simpsons' 20th year, Twentieth Century Fox decided to jump from last releasing Season 12 to Season 20. Hopefully, they will release the missing 7 seasons soon. 4 separate rentals. With featurette. 2009. Unrated.
