New Releases - April 3, 2012

Being Elmo [Acclaimed documetary about Kevin Clash, the creator of Sesame Street's immensely popular Elmo character. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg. With appearances by Frank Oz, Rosei O'Donnell, Cheryl Henson and Joan Ganz Cooney. Directed by Contance Marks. 2011.]

Broken Tower [James Franco (Howl, 127 Hours, Rise of the Planet of the Apes) wrote, directed and stars in this dramatic biography of poet Hart Crane. Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire) and Dave Franco co-star in this black and white indie cult feature. 2011.]

Double Hour, The [Ksenia Rappoport and Filippo Timi star in this Italian thriller about a retired cop who romances a chambermaid and goes on a trip with her that turns toward the dark side. Directed by Giuseppe Capotondi.  2009.]

Garrow's Law: Series 1 and 2 [Andrew Buchan, Alun Armstrong, Lyndsey Marshal, and Rupert Graves star in this popular British TV period law drama.]

Great Expectations [Ray Winstone, Gillian Anderson, David Suchet and Douglas Booth headline this excellent 2012 BBC version of the Charles Dickens classic about an orphaned boy who obsesses over an offbeat rich girl and eventually finds a benefactor who will try to help win her heart as an adult. Directed by Brian Kirk.]

Merlin: Season 3 [Colin Morgan returns for another exciting season in this British TV fantasy series that puts a new spin on the Camelot legend by taking things from the magician's point of view. This season, the power struggle begins. 2011.]

Nobody's Perfect [Niko Von Glasow, a victim of Thalidomide (a drug used in sedatives that affected more than 100,000 children who were born with defects during the late 1950's and early 1960's), directed and appears in this moving and funny documentary in which he recruits fellow victims to appear nude in a book. Their stories are surprisingly uplifting and life-affirming. Starring Fred Dove, Kim Morton, Bianca Vogel, Sofia Plich, Mat Fraser, Andreas Meyer and Theo Zavelberg. 2008. In German with English subtitles.] 

Single-Handed: Set 2 [Owen McDonnell, David Herlihy, Ruth McCabe, Simone Lahbib, Matthew McNulty, and Stephen Rea star in this well-made British TV police drama. 2010.]

Titanic: 100th Anniversary Collection [This disc contains three superb Discovery Channel specials honoring the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic: Curiosity: What sank Titanic?; Titanic: The Investigation Begins; and Last Mysteries of the Titanic. 2012.]

War Horse [Steven Spielberg directed this stunningly beautiful if sentimental epic war drama about a special horse that affected many people during World War I. Starring Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, and Jeremy Irvine. Chances are if you love horse movies and/or war movies you will love this film. It earned 6 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won the AFI award for Film of the Year. Spielberg's usual composer John Williams also provided the magnificent music score. 2011.]

We Bought a Zoo [Based on a true story, this hit family dramedy stars Matt Damon as a newly widowed columnist who decides to move his family across country to a new home that requires him to run a zoo next door. Unpredictable consequences and romance ensue. Another fun film for animal lovers. The fine cast includes Scarlett Johansson,  Thomas Haden Church, Patrick Fugit, Elle Fanning, J. B. Smooth and John Michael Higgins. Surprisingly directed by Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous). 2011.]

Coonskin [This controversial animated feature by Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat and 1978's Lord of the Rings) finally makes its DVD debut. Singer Barry White, Charles Gordone, Scatman Crothers and Miami Vice's Philip Michael Thomas provide the voices in this cult flick about how three very different people survive in the urban ghetto.]

No Country for Old Men: Collector's Edition [This is the first time we have had this 2-disc version of The Coen Brothers' Oscar winner for Best Picture. Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson, and Kelly McDonald star in this terrific and very dark noir story about a young man who sees a drug deal gone bad, grabs the money and pays the consequences when he is pursued by crazy mob killers and the police trying to protect him. Bardem also won a well-deserved Best Supporting Actor Oscar as the creepiest film killer since Hannibal Lechter was introduced.  This version has many special features previously not available.]
