New Releases - September 4, 2012

Bernie [see August 21 releases]

Five-Year Engagement, The [Jason Segel (The Muppets, TV's How I Met Your Mother) and Emily Blunt (Salmon Fishing in the Yemen) star as a happily engaged couple whose wedding keeps on getting delayed after one mishap after another in this funny but bittersweet R-rated romance comedy hit. Rhys Ifans, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Kevin Hart and Mindy Kaling are the wacky co-stars. Nicholas Stoller directed. 2012.]

Lucky One, The [Better than average film adaptation of multi-best-selling romance writer Nicholas Sparks' novel starring Zac Efron as a young Iraq veteran who returns home after surviving three rough tours, he believes in thanks to a signed photo of an unknown beautiful blonde that helped pull him through while others were killed. Obsessed with the beauty (nicely played by Taylor Schilling), he takes a job at the kennel where she works and ingratiates himself by befriending her son, but complications arise (don't they always?) when her nasty ex-husband becomes jealous. Blythe Danner and Jay R. Ferguson co-star in this 2012 hit. Directed by Scott Hicks.]

Oblivion Island: Haruka abd the Magic Mirror [Directed by Shinsuke Sato, this fanciful Japanimation feature focuses on a teen girl who tries to find her late mother's missing mirror. She follows a foxlike creature to a mysterious island full of items taken from neglectful owners, but to what purpose? Only the quirky ruler of the island knows. Voices by Haruka Ayase, Miyuki Sawashiro, Naho Toda, Nao Omori, Mitsuki Tanimura, Iemasa Kayumi and Tamaki Matsumoto. 2009.]

Office, The: Season 8 [Ed Helms as overly enthusiastic Andy takes over from snarky ex-boss Michael Scott, and disaster continues to provide laughs at the expense of the employees of paper supplier Dunder-Mifflin. Although Steve Carell's Scott is definitely missed, James Spader (late of TV's Boston Legal) is very funny as the arrogant and politically incorrect new CEO Robert California, who is also experiencing a bad hair year. Beloved regulars John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, and Jenna Fischer return. Catherine Tate (Doctor Who) also joined the cast as Andy's possible nemesis.]

Safe [2012][In this non-stop action thriller, Jason Staham (Crank, Killer Elite) plays an ex-NYC police detective who has to protect a young Chinese math prodigy from both a Triad boss and the Russian mob because she has a safe combination memorized. Catherine Chan, Robert John Burke, and Anson Mount co-star. Directed by Boaz Yakin.]

Summer Wars [Winner of the first Japanese Oscar for Best Animated Film, this Japanime feature is about a teen nerd who spends most of his life online until the girl of his dreams asks him to play her fake fiance at a family reunion. Directed by Mamoru Hosoda, who did the Girl who Leapt through Time. 2009.]
