New Releases - November 27 and 30, 2012

Tuesday, November 27, 2012:

Lawless [Rousing action drama about a gang of Virginia bootleggers in the 1930's who go to war with a new deputy and authorities who want to share profits. A great cast (Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Guy Pearce, Jason Clarke, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, and Gary Oldman) and quirky director John Hillcoat propel this cult flick written by Nick Cave (The Proposition). 2012.]

Paranorman [Hilarious animated horror/sci-fi comedy with the title character misfit boy taking on ghosts, zombies and grown ups to save his town from an ancient curse. Chris Butler directed, and the fun voice actors include Kodi-Smit McPhee, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Casey Affleck, Leslie Mann, Jeff Garlin, Elaine Stritch, and John Goodman. 2012.]

Step Up Revolution [in this hit musical sequel in the Step Up series, Kathryn McCormick stars as the new girl/wannabe dancer in Miami who hooks up with dance leader Ryan Guzman only to find out her developer father may take over their dancing ground. Cleopatra Coleman, Misha Gabriel Hamilton, Stephen Boss and Nicole Debeau also star. Scott Speer directed in 2012.]

Burning Man [An English chef with a chic restaurant in Australia tries to put his life and his relationship with his son back on track while surrounded by women. Matthew Goode, Rachel Griffiths, Kerry Fox, Bojana Novakovic, Essie Davis and Gia Carides star in this 2010 Australian drama directed by Jonathan Teplitzky.]

Footprints [In this intriguing indie drama, Sybil Temtchine plays a young woman who wakes up at Grauman's Chinese Theater and does not know who she is. She spends the day visiting famous L.A. locales and talking to odd characters to piece together her identity, leading to a surprise. Also starring H.M. Wynant, John Brickner, Catherine Bruhier, and Pippa Scott.
Directed by Steven Peros.]

Kingdom: Season 1 [Wonderful British TV series starring Stephen Fry as Peter Kingdom, a country solicitor who stands up for the little guy. Oddly, Season 2 was released before this. Well, better late than never. Hermionie Norris, Celia Imrie, Karl Davies and Tony Slattery also star.]

Madea's Witness Protection [One of the funniest in the Madeas series, this wacky farce has Tyler Perry's Madea agreeing to let Wall Street CFO Eugene Levy use her house to hide in exchange for a little cash. However, it turns out that the mob also wants him, leading to big trouble. Also starring Denise Richards, Doris Roberts, Romeo Miller, Tom Arnold, John Amos and Marla Gibbs. Perry also directed this hit.]

Manda Bala (Send a Bullet) [Brazil is known for its beautiful beaches, lush rain forests and vibrant culture. In recent years, it has developed more of a reputation for corrupt politicians, kidnapping and plastic surgery. This riveting documentary directed by Jason Kohn artfully connects these disparate elements and shows what has happened to the country.]

Piece of Cake [Excellent action-packed British TV miniseries soap opera following the love lives and adventures of the fighter pilots of the RAF Hornet Squadron during WWII. Nathaniel Parker, Tim Woodward, Boyd Gaines, Neil Dudgeon, Tom Burlinson, Helena Mitchell, George Anton, and David Horovitch star. Directed by Ian Toynton.]

Red Hill [Ryan Kwantem plays a constable whose first day on the job at quiet small town Red Hill is anything but quiet thanks to an escaped murderer on his way to kill the men who put him in prison. Steve Bisley and Tom E. Lewis co-star.]

Josh Brolin is perfectly cast as the younger Jones. Barry Sonnenfeld return to direct this 3rd installment co-starring Jermaine Clement, Emma Thompson, Michael Stuhlberg, and Nicole Scherzinger. 2012.]

Men in Black 3 [aka MIB3]

Sparkle [2012] [The late Whitney Houston's dynamic final performance dominates this good remake of the fictionalized version of the rise of The Supremes in the 1960's with talented Jordin Sparks as the lead singer. Carmen Ejogo, Derek Luke, Mike Epps, Tika Sumpter, Ceelo Green and Curtis Armstrong also star. Salim Akil directed in 2012.]
