New Releases - December 31, 2013

Blu ray:

Don Jon [The sole major release for the last week of 2013 is an underrated R rated gem of an edgy romantic comedy from triple threat auteur Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who starred in, directed and wrote this acclaimed film. He plays a charming, nice-looking young guy who is given the nickname Don Jon because he can usually bed attractive women whenever he wants.  Ironically, he gets the most sexual satisfaction watching porn alone on his computer.  When he meets a gorgeous girl (Scarlett Johansson) who may be the woman of his dreams, can he change his fantasies into the reality they both want?   The impressive cast includes Julianne Moore, Tony Danza, Glenne Headley, Brie Larson, Rob Brown and Jeremy Luke. Levitt (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Looper) has a lot of talent and he's threatening to become as ubiquitous as James Franco. Although some conservatives and uptights may be put off by the porn angle, his feature film directing debut shows a lot of promise and self-assurance, and it will be interesting to see what his follow-up will be.  2013. Rated R. 90 minutes. Box Office: $25 million.]
